Arman
1928–2005, France / USA
Arman (born Armand Pierre Fernandez, 1928–2005) was a French and American artist, born in Nice. From 1961 he lived part of the time in New York, and in 1973 he became a US citizen. He studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Nice and the École du Louvre in Paris. In 1960, together with Yves Klein, the critic Pierre Restany and others, he founded the Nouveau Réalisme movement. He became known for his “accumulations” – collections of identical everyday objects in display cases – as well as compositions of smashed or sliced objects. The screenprint “Boom-Boom” (1966) offered by the gallery comes from the “New York International” portfolio: a composition of revolver silhouettes with a red accent. An impression of this print is held by the Whitney Museum in New York.
