Hishikawa Moronobu (atrib. / workshop)
1618–1694, Japan
Hishikawa Moronobu (菱川師宣, c. 1618–1694) was a Japanese artist regarded as the founder of ukiyo-e and of the Hishikawa school. He was born in Hota, Awa Province (now Chiba Prefecture), into a family of embroiderers, and first made embroidery designs. In the Kanbun era (1661–1673) he moved to Edo (now Tokyo) and studied Kanō and Tosa painting. His earliest known signed illustrated book dates from 1672; in all he illustrated more than a hundred books and also made single-sheet prints. He depicted beautiful women, scenes of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter and kabuki theatre, and warriors. The black-and-white woodblock prints of court scenes offered by the gallery are attributed to Moronobu or his workshop.
