Jonas Čeponis
1926–2003
Jonas Čeponis was born on 2 April 1926 in Gaveikėnai (Utena county) and died on 7 January 2003 in Vilnius. He graduated from the Lithuanian Art Institute in 1951, taught there in 1980–1988 and became a professor in 1988; in 1977–1980 he taught at the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute. From 1951 he took part in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. He mostly painted expressive, romanticised landscapes of his native village with the motif of the sun – since childhood he had been enchanted when the sun laid a golden bridge across the lake. In 1984 he received the Lithuanian SSR State Prize. His works are held by the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, the MO Museum and other museums in Lithuania and abroad.
