KOJO MARFO
b. 1980, Ghana / UK
Kojo Marfo (b. 1980, Kwahu Tafo, Ghana) is a Ghanaian-born painter who lives in London. As a child in Ghana he came to know traditional Akan artefacts, sculptures and carvings; as a young man he moved to London. He is largely self-taught. He calls his approach "AfroGenesis": it combines the language of Cubism with Ghanaian artistic traditions, and he names Picasso and Fernand Léger among his influences. His paintings address inequality, religion, politics and spirituality. In 2021 JD Malat Gallery in London held his exhibition "Dreaming of Identity"; a retrospective was later shown in Baku. The gallery's work "The Missing Girl and the Prince" was exhibited at the Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum in 2022.
