Lasar Segall
1889–1957, Brazil
Lasar Segall (1889–1957) was a Vilnius-born Brazilian painter, printmaker and sculptor of Litvak origin. He studied at M. Antokolsky's school of industrial art in Vilnius and, from 1906, at the Berlin and later the Dresden art academies; he took part in the Berliner Sezession and exhibited with the Expressionist group Die Brücke. In the summers of 1908–1912 he returned to Vilnius, painting the lanes of the Old Town and Litvak quarters. His German-period works are marked by restrained colour and expressive, dramatic forms. In 1923 he moved to Brazil, lived in Paris in 1928–1932 and, on his return, founded the Society of Modern Art in São Paulo. The Lasar Segall Museum operates in São Paulo, and MoMA in New York holds his prints.
