Milan Knížák (1940–2026) was a Czech artist: a maker of actions and happenings, sculptor, printmaker, experimental musician and art theorist. He was born in Plzeň. In the 1960s he founded the Aktual group in Prague and staged the first happenings in Czechoslovakia; from 1965 he directed Fluxus East and took part in Fluxus events in the USA. Under communism he was kept under surveillance and persecuted. He was rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1990–1997 and headed the National Gallery in Prague in 1999–2011. His works are held by MoMA in New York, Tate in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The gallery offers a 1986 screenprint published in Cologne – a self-portrait whose halves are joined with safety pins.
