Pranas Domšaitis
1880–1965
Pranas Domšaitis (1880–1965) was a Lithuanian expressionist painter, born in the village of Kropynai (Cropiens) in East Prussia. He worked on his parents' farm until the age of 27, studied at the Königsberg Academy of Art in 1907–1910 and then continued his training in Lovis Corinth's studio in Berlin. He painted landscapes and religious and figurative compositions in intense colours, often with black outlines. In 1937 his works were shown in the Nazi 'Degenerate Art' exhibition and removed from German museums. From 1949 he lived in Cape Town, South Africa. The Pranas Domšaitis Gallery opened in Klaipėda in 2001. The gallery offers oil paintings, including works with African motifs and 'The Flight to Egypt' (1953); some are double-sided.
