Žibuntas Mikšys

1923–2013

Žibuntas Mikšys (1923–2013) was a Lithuanian émigré artist and printmaker. Born in Kaunas, he took his first art lessons at the Kaunas Jesuit Gymnasium in a club led by Alfonsas Janulis. In 1944 he fled with his family to Vienna and in 1945 to Germany; in 1946–1949 he studied at the art academies of Nuremberg and Stuttgart and also trained in theatre directing. In 1949 he left for the USA, living in Detroit, Chicago and New York, where he made his largest prints. From 1962 he lived in Paris, and in 1979–1985 taught Lithuanian at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales. Poetry and theatre were his main inspirations; his mother, the actress and director Zuzana Arlauskaitė-Mikšienė, had a strong influence on him.
