Vincas Kisarauskas

1934–1988

Vincas Kisarauskas (1934–1988) was a painter, printmaker, sculptor, stage designer and art writer. He was born in Augmėnai and died in New York. In 1959 he graduated from the Lithuanian Art Institute, and from 1965 he taught at the M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts in Vilnius. He fell out of favour with the authorities while still a student, when in 1956, on All Souls' Day, he took part in a rally at Rasos Cemetery against Soviet actions in Hungary; after that the KGB kept him under surveillance. In Soviet times his works were rarely accepted for exhibitions, mostly small bookplates. In 1988 he was posthumously awarded the Lithuanian SSR State Prize. His works are held by the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the MO Museum and museums in Poland, France, Russia and the USA.
