Aloyzas Stasiulevičius

Aloyzas Stasiulevičius (born 1931 in Ariogala) is a painter whose work centres on Vilnius. As D. Zovienė writes, the city in his paintings is not merely an urban landscape but a symbol of Lithuanian history and culture. He approaches landscape like a stage set or a work of monumental art: he rejects plot and narrative, choosing poetic metaphor and the principles of musical thinking. He interprets the same motif differently each time and often groups paintings into cycles. His painting is marked by logical composition, a sensitive feeling for colour, musical linear rhythm and an innovative treatment of collage and texture. His works are held by the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the MO Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery.
