Celeste Rapone
b. 1985, USA
Celeste Rapone was born in 1985 in New Jersey. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2007 and completed her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013; she lives in Chicago. The eccentric characters in her paintings, often the artist's alter egos, are crammed into tight interiors, their limbs pressing against the edges of the canvas, and they convey her generation's anxiety and ennui. In 2018 she received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and in 2026 an award for painting from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her works are in the collections of the Hammer Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. "Save Me" (2009, acrylic), offered by the gallery, is an early work with a pixelated video-game aesthetic.
