Emmanuel Mane-Katz
1894–1962, Ukraine / France
Emmanuel Mane-Katz (1894–1962) was a School of Paris painter, born into a Jewish family in Kremenchuk (now Ukraine). He studied at the Kyiv art school and the Vilnius Drawing School, and in 1913 went to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts under Fernand Cormon. From 1921 he lived in Paris, became a French citizen and during the Second World War took refuge in the USA. He is best known for scenes of Jewish shtetl life in Eastern Europe – rabbis, musicians, yeshiva students. He died in Tel Aviv; a museum bearing his name operates in Haifa. The gallery offers a 1966 colour lithograph from the series after Sholem Aleichem's "Stempeniou", begun by the artist and completed after his death by his friend Manaranche.
