José Gurvich (born Zusmanas Gurvičius, 1927–1974) was born in Jieznas and emigrated to Uruguay with his parents as a child. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Montevideo and in the studio of the artist Joaquín Torres García (Taller Torres García), and was soon recognised as a promising constructivist. He later worked in Europe, Israel and the USA, where he died unexpectedly at the age of 47. He was shaped by many cultures and influences. A museum bearing his name operates in Montevideo. More than 50 of his works have been sold at Sotheby's and Christie's, and in 2021 his canvas "Pessaj" sold in Uruguay for more than half a million US dollars.
