Theo Tobiasse
1927–2012, France
Théo Tobiasse (1927–2012) was an artist born in Jaffa to a Litvak family; the family soon returned to Lithuania and a few years later moved to Paris. The experience of migration and Jewish cultural heritage became the core of his work, in which themes of memory, exile and identity intertwine. His works combine expressionist intensity, decorative and surrealist elements and a symbolic language; recurring motifs include animals, figures carrying cities, ritual signs and historical allusions. In 1968 he created 'Diaspora', a cycle of 19 colour lithographs. His paintings, prints and ceramics are held in museum collections, and his stained glass and mosaics decorate churches and public buildings.
