Arvydas Šaltenis
b. 1944
Arvydas Šaltenis is a painter and teacher. In 1970 he graduated from the Lithuanian Art Institute (now the Vilnius Academy of Arts), later taught there, served as the academy's rector in 1994–2004 and has been a professor since 2003. In the 1970s, together with Algimantas Švėgžda, Kostas Dereškevičius and Algimantas Kuras, he formed an informal group of painters known as the 'Four', which renewed Lithuanian painting: instead of monumentality and decorativeness it offered a de-romanticised view of Soviet everyday life and the ordinary person, complex compositions and sharp colour combinations. In 2014 he received the Lithuanian Government Culture and Art Prize. His works are held by the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the MO Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery.
