Audrius Puipa
1960–1997
Audrius Puipa (1960–1997) was a Lithuanian painter and printmaker, the brother of Algimantas Puipa. In 1985 he graduated in graphic art from the Lithuanian Art Institute, where he studied under A. Švėgžda, R. V. Gibavičius and J. Kuzminskis. He worked at the Vyturys publishing house in 1987–1988, taught at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1995–1997 and was a member of the group Grupė 1 from 1992. His work centres on the lives of artists, bohemians and outsiders, the Lithuanian village with its customs and fading traditions, and family scenes. His precisely drawn figurative compositions, mostly set in interiors, resemble film stills with unusual perspectives, peopled by characters both real and seemingly from the spirit world. They blend the classical and the modern with irony and the grotesque.
