Cassi Namoda
b. 1988, Mozambique
Cassi Namoda (b. 1988, Maputo, Mozambique) is a painter who has lived in Kenya, Haiti, Indonesia, the USA and other countries; she currently works in Italy and New York. She originally studied cinema, and her paintings often resemble frozen film stills – fragments of a larger story. Her work explores the history and culture of post-colonial Africa, especially its Portuguese-speaking regions, combining personal memories with archival material. Her paintings are characterised by washed-out colours, bold compositions, flat perspective and a mood of magical realism. Her work is held by the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
