George Mačiūnas
1931–1978
Jurgis Mačiūnas (George Maciunas, 1931–1978) was a Lithuanian-born artist and one of the founders of the Fluxus movement. He spent his childhood in Kaunas; in 1944 he left for Germany with his parents and in 1948 moved to the USA. He studied art history, graphic art and architecture at the Cooper Union in New York, and in 1954 earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. In 1960, together with Almius Šalčius, he opened the AG Gallery in New York, where Fluxus was born. He wrote manifestos, organised concerts, published Fluxus anthologies and made happenings and objects. Fluxus opposed academism through short forms, provocative actions and ambiguous humour. His works are held by MoMA.
