Henrikas Šalkauskas
1925–1979
Henrikas Šalkauskas (1925–1979) was born in Kaunas, graduated from the Aušra boys' gymnasium and arrived in Australia in 1949. His work came to prominence in the 1950s–60s in the context of modern Australian art: local critics saw in it European artistic traditions, the emotional force of his abstracted compositions, a bold individual style and an unconventional technique. Among the Lithuanian artists working there – Vaclovas Ratas, Algirdas Šimkūnas, Jurgis Mikševičius – his work stood out for the consistency of its search. The gallery offers screenprints, a linocut and mixed-media works from 1958–1964. His works are held by the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
