Juzefa Katiliūtė

1916–2009

Juzefa Katiliūtė (1916–2009) was a Lithuanian painter and printmaker. She was born in Igliauka, in the Marijampolė district. She graduated from the Kaunas Art School in 1940 and from the Vilnius Academy of Art in 1942, where she studied under J. Vienožinskis. In 1945 she left for Switzerland and in 1948 graduated from the Geneva art school. She painted in oil, acrylic and ink and made colour screenprints. Her early paintings are dominated by realistic figurative compositions, her later ones by abstracted landscape motifs in which expressive forms and bright colour combinations convey natural phenomena and human experience. Her works are held by Swiss museums and the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.
