Leonas Katinas
1907–1984
Leonas Katinas (1907–1984) was a Lithuanian painter and the father of the painter L. L. Katinas. Born in Ampolis in the Utena district, he studied at the Kaunas Art School in 1933–1935 and acted at the Šiauliai Drama Theatre in 1941–1945. He graduated from the Vilnius Art Institute in 1948 and taught there until 1973. He began with traditional landscapes, still lifes and portraits, but in the 1970s and 1980s his painting became almost abstract: ornamental compositions of planes with cut edges, bold combinations of bright colours, black outlines and thick layers of paint. The gallery's acrylic work Composition (1978) belongs to this period. His works are held by the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art and the MO Museum.
