NKSIN

b. 1994, Japan

NKSIN (Shin Nakagawa) was born in 1994 in Fukushima, Japan, where he still lives and works. He is a self-taught painter. Having grown up in a Japanese-Filipino family, he explores social discrimination and identity, drawing on personal experience and approaching these themes with irony and humour. He paints mainly with an airbrush, usually in black and white: smoothly blended shades and crisp edges recall 1990s American animation and Japanese subculture. In his portraits he depicts cultural icons of the past dressed in contemporary clothes. In 2022 GR Gallery in New York held his first solo exhibition in the USA, 'HUSHED'.
