Samuel Bak
b. 1933
Samuel Bak is a painter of Litvak origin. His talent was first revealed in an exhibition held in the Vilnius Ghetto in June 1942, when he was only nine. He was confined to the ghetto with his family after the Nazis occupied Lithuania; only he and his mother survived, while his father and four grandparents perished. After the war he left Lithuania, studied in Munich, and in 1948 emigrated to Israel, where he entered the Bezalel art school. He lived in Paris, Rome, Israel, New York and Switzerland, and since 1993 in the USA. He paints allegorical pictures in a technique recalling the old European masters, reflecting the trauma of the Holocaust and the memory of a lost childhood and homeland. His works are held by the Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History and the TARTLE collection.
