Silvestras Džiaukštas

1928–2022

Silvestras Džiaukštas (1928–2022) was a Lithuanian painter, born in Mikalavas in the Švenčionys district. He graduated from the Lithuanian Art Institute in 1954, where he studied under Antanas Gudaitis and Vytautas Mackevičius, and taught there in 1962–1972. His work is dominated by expressive figurative compositions on themes of work, sport, leisure and history, unusual harmonies of green and blue, and coarse impasto. He created an anti-militarist cycle (1969–1972) and, from 1970, the cycle 'People and Horses'. In 1973 he received the Lithuanian SSR State Prize. His works are in the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the MO Museum and the Zimmerli Art Museum (USA). The gallery offers 'Faktūros II' (Textures II), a 1966 oil on canvas painted in thick layers of paint.
