Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年)
1839–1892, Japan
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年) (1839–1892) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, often called the last great master of this woodblock-print tradition. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), he became a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi in 1850. He depicted historical, legendary and moral scenes and illustrated newspapers. His best-known series are 'Twenty-Eight Famous Murders with Verse' (from 1866) and 'One Hundred Aspects of the Moon' (1885–1892). After a severe depression he adopted the name Taiso in 1873. The gallery's sheets belong to the 1882 chūban-format series 'Yoshitoshi ryakuga' (Sketches by Yoshitoshi), in which scenes from classic tales are drawn in a loose, sketch-like manner.
