Vytautas Kasiulis

1918–1995

Vytautas Kasiulis (1918–1995) was born in Simnas (Alytus district) and died in Paris. He studied and taught at the Kaunas Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts and the Freiburg School of Arts and Crafts, and in 1948 settled in Paris, where he radically changed his manner of painting and joined the local art community. He worked in painting, printmaking and book illustration. In 1960 he acquired his own gallery and later the Galerie Royal in central Paris, where, largely thanks to his wife Bronė Kasiulienė, an active exhibition programme ran until 1990. His mature work is marked by expressiveness, refined colour, decorativeness and an ironic eye. His works are held by the museums of modern art in Paris and New York.
