Zoma Baitler
1908–1994
Zoma Baitler was born in 1908 in Kaunas and died in 1994 in Montevideo. He studied art in Kaunas under Povilas Kaufmanas (Kaupas) and in 1927 came to Montevideo, where he studied at Joaquín Torres García's school (TTG). He painted landscapes and city life in an Impressionist style shading into Expressionism, closer to the Kaunas school than to the TTG manner. He exhibited in North and South America and in Israel. In 1963 he was appointed cultural attaché at the Uruguayan embassy in Israel for three years. His works are held by the National Museum of Visual Arts and the Juan Manuel Blanes Museum in Montevideo and by the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The gallery offers his oil painting “Jardin del Kibutz Shvaim”.
